Marrakech – In a landmark collaboration, Populous, an esteemed American architectural firm, and French-Moroccan firm Oulalous + Choi (O+C) are mutually securing the contract to design Casablanca’s Grand Stadium for the highly anticipated 2030 World Cup.
This prestigious win not only underscores the global appeal and expertise of both firms but also signals a significant milestone in the development of one of Africa’s most iconic sporting venues.
According to Populous’ press release, the “firm’s selection for the prestigious project comes as a result of an arduous competition overseen by Morocco’s National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP).”
Among a pool of renowned contenders, including Herzog & De Meuron, Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster + Partners, Cruz y Ortiz, GMP Architects, and HPP Architects, Populous was the winner, solidifying its position as the frontrunner in architectural innovation and design excellence.
Populous, the architectural powerhouse behind iconic structures like the new Inter Milan stadium, London’s Wembley Stadium, and New York’s Yankee Stadium, has officially announced the commencement of preparations for its latest venture.
Set to unfold on a sprawling 100-hectare expanse in El Mansouria, nestled within the province of Benslimane, just 38 kilometers north of Casablanca, this ambitious undertaking marks a significant step towards realizing the vision for Casablanca’s Grand Stadium.
Following the green light from public funding approvals in October 2023, Populous is gearing up to bring its expertise and innovation to transform this site into a world-class sporting arena.
Highlighting a fusion of tradition and innovation, the official statement from Oualalou + Choi and Populous unveils an inspired design for Casablanca’s Grand Stadium.
Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of Morocco, the stadium’s architecture takes cues from the cherished social gathering known as “moussem,” with a visionary approach that promises to redefine the landscape.
Under a grand tent-like roof structure, seamlessly integrated into the lush wooded surroundings, the stadium emerges as a striking symbol of unity and celebration.
Beyond its aesthetic allure, the stadium is crafted to meet the rigorous standards set by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
With its state-of-the-art facilities and versatile infrastructure, it is poised to host a diverse array of matches during the highly anticipated 2030 World Cup, an event in which Morocco proudly shares hosting duties with Spain and Portugal.
In a collaborative effort, Populous spearheaded the winning project alongside engineering firms including Maffeis Engineering, ME Engineering, Rider Levett Bucknall, Momentum, and SEPSI, as reported by the press release.
According to Populous, with a track record of over 40 years of architectural innovation and more than 3,200 projects worldwide, they stand poised to deliver a stadium that not only meets the stringent standards of FIFA but also “embodies the essence of shared human connection and celebration.”
