Fez — AA Gallery is hosting “Seeking Forever,” a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Ahlam Lemseffer, on view until March 27.
The exhibition offers an in-depth look at a body of work developed over more than four decades, positioning Lemseffer as a central figure in Morocco’s contemporary visual art landscape.
Exploring form, space, and structure
Lemseffer’s practice moves fluidly across painting, sculpture, and installation. Rather than remaining confined to a single medium, her work consistently interrogates the relationship between form and space. The exhibition highlights how her compositions evolve from flat surfaces into spatial structures that interact with their surroundings.
Color plays a dynamic role in this process, balanced by an architectural rigor that gives the work both emotional resonance and analytical clarity. Throughout “Seeking Forever,” viewers are invited to consider how visual elements extend beyond the plane to shape perception and movement within the exhibition space.
A transnational artistic path
Born in El Jadida in 1950, Lemseffer developed her artistic identity between Morocco and France. She is a graduate of the École des Arts Décoratifs and ESAG Penninghen in Paris, and also pursued studies in literature at Université Paris VIII. This dual education, combining visual discipline with literary thought, has contributed to the intellectual depth that characterizes her work.
Her career has received international recognition, including acknowledgment from the Académie française des Sciences, des Arts et des Lettres.
Since the 1980s, Lemseffer’s work has been exhibited in major institutions and events, from the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to the Palais d’Iéna, as well as international biennales in Cairo, Alexandria, and Graz. Today, her works form part of significant public and private collections worldwide.
Commitment beyond the studio
Lemseffer’s influence extends beyond her personal artistic production. In 2012, she founded the Maison de l’Art Contemporain in Briech-Asilah, creating a residency and exchange space dedicated to contemporary creation and international dialogue. The initiative has since become an important platform for supporting artists and fostering cross-cultural collaboration.
This broader engagement with the cultural ecosystem reflects a consistent commitment to sustaining and advancing contemporary art practices in Morocco and beyond.
An ongoing search
“Seeking Forever” reflects an artistic approach defined by persistence rather than repetition. The exhibition traces a continuous investigation into sign, material, and spatial experience, resisting stagnation in favor of constant exploration.
By presenting decades of work within a single narrative, AA Gallery offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the evolution of a practice that remains open, questioning, and in motion.
The exhibition situates Ahlam Lemseffer’s work as an ongoing inquiry into form, space, and meaning within contemporary art.
