Rabat – Khaled Al-Zaqaq, a Saudi doctor and astronomer, expects Eid Al Fitr to fall on May 2 in the country.

Astronomer Al-Zaqaq shared his calculations during a program on Al-Arabiya channel, quoted by Saudi Expatriates website on Sunday.

According to the meteorologist, on the 29th Ramadan, which corresponds to April 30, the moon will disappear approximately 20 minutes before sunset, and will appear four hours after sunset.

He noted that this year’s Ramadan will be complete in 30 days, forecasting May 2 to be the first day of Eid Al Fitr in Saudi Arabia.

The Eid celebration marks the end of Ramadan, a month of daily fasting in Islam where Muslims seek to do more good deeds while practicing  self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate.

The official announcement of Eid Al Fitr has yet to be confirmed by the sighting of the crescent the night before.

As for Eid holiday for students, it was initially scheduled to start on April 25 but Saudi authorities have extended the holiday to begin on April 21 to May 8.

Holidays in the private sector will begin on April 30 and will last four days, according to the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.

Several Gulf countries expect to celebrate Eid Al Fitr on May 2.

The International Astronomy Center in UAE also announced that May 2 is expected to be the first day of Eid in most countries.

Meanwhile, countries which started Ramadan from April 3, including Morocco, Indonesia, Jordan, Oman, and India, will investigate the moon on May 1.
