This festival is all about creating connections, bringing together Kurdish filmmakers and global talents to spark cultural exchanges that go beyond borders.

Marrakech – The 11th edition of the Duhok International Film Festival is set to bring together the world of cinema and sports in a spectacular celebration of culture.

Held in the vibrant city of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq from December 9-16, this year’s festival promises to be a dynamic and diverse event.

With 107 films from across the globe, a focus on Indian cinema, and a theme centered around sports, the festival is a unique opportunity for filmmakers, film lovers, and sports enthusiasts to connect, share, and celebrate storytelling on a global scale.

The Duhok Film Festival continues to grow in importance year after year. This year, audiences will experience a diverse lineup of feature films, short films, and documentaries, all in both competition and out-of-competition categories.

The festival will be held at two key locations: Duhok University’s congregation hall and the Duhok Mall Cineplex, where the films will unfold, offering a rich cultural experience to both local and international attendees.

A global stage for cinema and sports

The theme of the festival this year is sports – a universal concept that transcends borders and brings people together.

Sports and cinema have always shared a special connection, both stirring deep emotions and uniting audiences.

The 2024 Duhok Film Festival celebrates this relationship, highlighting sports as a central theme in the films showcased this year.

From the 2024 Paris Olympics to the UEFA Euro 2024 and the Copa America Cup, global sporting events have been a focal point in the world’s cultural conversation.

The festival aims to amplify this by integrating the theme of sports into its programming, reflecting the worldwide excitement surrounding these events.

It’s an effort to show how sports intersect with cinema to create powerful narratives that resonate across cultures and generations.

Bridging borders with Indian cinema

This year’s festival has a special focus on Indian cinema, a country with a rich cinematic history and a vibrant film industry that produces thousands of films annually.

India has been invited as the guest country for the 11th Duhok Film Festival, bringing with it a wealth of artistic and cultural richness.

The decision to feature Indian cinema comes after years of discussions and requests from the Indian film industry to participate in the festival.

This marks an exciting and significant moment for Duhok, as Indian cinema’s presence will add new depth and diversity to the festival.

Indian cinema’s vast and varied landscape offers something for everyone – from emotionally charged dramas to larger-than-life blockbusters.

The inclusion of Indian films in this year’s lineup is a way to connect the people of Kurdistan with a different cultural perspective, while also reflecting the shared histories and cultural bonds between the two nations.

A festival for the people of Kurdistan and the world

While the festival takes place in Duhok, it’s clear that the Duhok International Film Festival belongs to everyone.

The festival president, Amir Ali Mohammed Tahir, emphasized that the people of Kurdistan and the world are the true owners of the event.

This is a place where filmmakers from all corners of the globe can come together, share their work, and connect with an eager audience.

The festival is not just about watching films; it’s about fostering dialogue, promoting cultural exchange, and building a global community through the medium of cinema.

This year, films from 31 countries will be featured, allowing attendees to experience a wide range of cinematic traditions, styles, and stories.

The inclusion of sports further enriches the experience, providing a unique lens through which to explore human emotion, triumph, and struggle.

Honoring excellence in film

As with every edition of the Duhok Film Festival, awards will be given to recognize exceptional achievements in film.

The prestigious Golden Hair Leaf award will be awarded to the best feature film, while $10,000 will go to the best feature film in the World Cinema competition.

Other categories will honor the best director, best international short film, best international documentary, and new talent.

The French Goethe Institute will also present a $5,000 award for the best international documentary, and jury members will award additional cash prizes to recognize artistic excellence across the competition.

The festival’s connection to the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) – known as the “Asian Oscars” – further solidifies its importance in the international film community.

As a trusted member of APSA, Duhok serves as a platform for films from Asia and the Pacific region to be showcased to the world, placing the festival in the global spotlight.

A dream come true for film lovers

The 11th Duhok International Film Festival is more than just a film event; it’s a cultural celebration that bridges worlds, connects people, and showcases the power of storytelling.

Whether you’re drawn to the drama of Indian cinema, the thrill of sports, or the excitement of discovering new filmmakers, this year’s festival promises something for everyone.

As the festival kicks off on December 9, the world will once again turn its attention to Duhok – a city where the world of cinema and the world of sports converge, and where filmmakers from all over the globe come together to share their stories.

One thing is for certain — the 11th edition of the Duhok International Film Festival is sure to be a memorable celebration of art, culture, and the universal power of film.
