Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, will be on April 21 in the UK, according to Islamic Relief.
The British Green Lane mosque also confirmed the news today.
“The new moon of Shawwal HAS been sighted therefore Eid will be celebrated on Friday 21 April 2023,” the mosque said on Facebook.
Many countries announced April 21 as Eid day, marking the beginning of Shawwal – the tenth month in the Islamic calendar.
Saudi Arabia is among the countries that are celebrating Eid Al Fitr on Friday.
Muslims celebrate the festival through different rituals, including a special prayer on the morning of the Eid; it is advised to perform the Eid prayer in congregation at mosques.
Eid is a “period of rest and good tidings! There are many virtues to the day. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to do many things when celebrating Eid,” Islamic Relief UK said on its website.
One of the traditional ways to celebrate Eid is to wear one’s finest clothes, share gifts, and exchange visits with family and loved ones.
The number of Muslims is estimated at four million in the UK, the latest official figures suggest. The data, compiled in 2021, also noted that the Muslim population in England and Wales stood at 1.3 million at the time of the census, an 43% increase in the number of people who follow Islam.
