Rabat – Morocco’s tourism hub Merzouga featured this year in a ranking of the world’s Nature Destinations from TripAdvisor, a global tourism website.

On the ranking, Merzouga featured in 14th place alongside other world-class destinations such as Ha Long Bay in Vietnam and Mauritius.

“Bask in glorious sunsets and channel your inner sheik while you ride a meandering camel across the windblown dunes of Erg Chebbi,” TripAdvisor wrote in its description of Merzouga.

According to the website, the small village in Southeast Morocco “gives visitors a taste of desert life, and treks to nearby villages will reward you with African revelry, including music and dance. Ask your hotel to arrange a guided tour.”

This is not the first time Merzouga has featured on a ranking of the world’s best destinations for tourists. In August 2023, Merzouga ranked 3rd on a list of the best international tourism destinations according to travelers from TimeOut magazine.

“Beyond the town of Merzouga, the Erg Chebbi dunes are a spectacular vision of shape-shifting golden sands that rise up to 300 meters tall and span over 28 km in the heart of the Sahara,” TimeOut said of Merzouga.

Other Moroccan cities have equally featured on different categories of TripAdvisor’s annual rankings, with the financial capital Casablanca ranked 23rd in the Best of the Best destinations list, out of 25 cities featured. Fez and Marrakech have also appeared in other categories of the ranking.

Despite the devastating September earthquake, Morocco’s tourism sector recorded an impressive recovery and was on track to reach its goal of welcoming a record-breaking 14 million visitors.

Meanwhile, tourism revenues as of November reached $9.8 billion, up 15.8% year-on-year.
