Rabat – The streets of Essaouira pulsed with rhythm, color, and energy today as the 26th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival officially opened, transforming the Atlantic city into a living stage for one of Morocco’s most powerful cultural celebrations.

From the narrow alleys of the old medina to the wide-open space of Moulay Hassan Square, thousands gathered to witness the festival’s traditional opening parade, a spectacle that has become one of its most anticipated moments.

At the center of it all were the Gnaoua maâlems, spiritual masters and musicians whose ancestral art carries centuries of history, memory, and ritual.

Dressed in flowing robes of bright reds, blues, greens, and yellow, and wearing the iconic tasseled hats that define Gnaoua identity, hundreds of performers marched through the city in a moving wave of sound and movement.

The hypnotic pulse of the guembri, the metallic clash of krakebs, and the echo of collective chants filled the air, creating an atmosphere that was impossible to ignore.

Locals leaned from balconies, tourists lined the streets with cameras raised, and children danced alongside the procession as the parade made its way toward the festival’s main stage.

Free and open to all, the ceremony once again turned the city into a giant communal celebration, where Moroccans and visitors from across the world came together to experience the spirit of Gnaoua culture.

The opening procession served as a reminder of the festival’s deeper mission: preserving Gnaoua heritage while opening it to dialogue with global sounds.

Over the next three days, Essaouira will host a rich program of concerts, collaborations, and cultural encounters, blending Gnaoua traditions with jazz, blues, Afrobeat, and world music.
