Rabat – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has described Gaza as “hell on earth” in the wake of Israel’s invasion of the last remaining urban area in Gaza, the border town of Rafah.

In a tweet today, the UN agency further said that Israel’s attack on families seeking shelter is “horrifying.”

Israel began its invasion of  Rafah on May 6, despite international outcry and even some of Israel’s long-standing allies opposing the plan, including the US.

Reports on Saturday indicate that Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have burned Palestinians alive in what is widely considered a massacre against Gazans.

“There are reports of mass casualties including children and women among those killed,” the tweet reads.

“No place is safe,” the agency wrote, describing the dire humanitarian situation. “No one is safe.”

On Sunday, the IOF shelled a displacement camp in northern Rafah, killing at least 35 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Amid the horrifying scenes, Israel continues to push for its narrative that the attack was carried out in “accordance with international law,” and “using precise munitions, and based on preliminary intelligence indicating the use of the area by Hamas terrorists.”

On May 24, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered the Israeli government to “immediately halt its military offensive or any other action in Rafah” that may contribute to severe humanitarian crises.

The ICJ equally mandated Israel to ensure “unimpeded access” to Gaza for any UN-mandated investigative bodies. The measure aims to facilitate thorough investigations into allegations of genocide and other potential war crimes.

However, Israel has continuously ignored calls from the ICJ, prompting international calls to impose strict sanctions against Israel.

Since the start of Israel’s devastating war on Gaza on October 7 of last year, the IOF has killed over 35,900 Palestinians and injured over 80,600 others.
