Rabat – Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose raspy, powerhouse voice defined the 1980s power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75.
A statement shared on her official website said her family and team were heartbroken to announce that she unexpectedly passed away the previous night in a hospital in Portugal due to complications from her ongoing illness, which she was being treated for.
Tyler had been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she kept a home, for emergency intestinal surgery, with her representatives confirming the news in May.
Reports later indicated the surgery had been for a burst appendix, and that she had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest, before being placed in a medically induced coma. Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler first found international success in the late 1970s with “It’s a Heartache.”
Her career reached new heights in 1983 when she partnered with producer Jim Steinman on “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a chart-topping hit that became one of the decade’s most successful anthems.
The duo later worked together again on “Holding Out for a Hero”.
Tyler went on to represent the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and remained active in music well into her seventies, releasing her 18th studio album in 2021 and putting out new singles just months before her death.
Her influence continues to inspire artists and fans worldwide, cementing her legacy in pop music history.
In recent years, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” found an unexpected second life on TikTok.
where its dramatic chorus fueled viral “turnaround challenge” videos inspired by a scene in the movie “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid”.
It introduced Tyler’s unmistakable voice to a generation of young listeners who discovered the song decades after its release.
This enduring popularity highlights her lasting impact on music and culture.
