Fez — Dyson has taken its obsession with engineering into a new and unexpected place: your mouth.

The British technology company has launched “CameraJet,” a $499.99 (roughly MAD 4,700) electric toothbrush, equipped with a camera, machine learning, and a system that fires targeted jets of mouthwash between teeth.

Unveiled on September 1, the device marks Dyson’s entry into oral care and attempts to combine several steps of a dental routine into one product.

At the center of “CameraJet” is a 100,000-pixel macro camera that watches the user’s teeth while brushing.

The camera captures 28 images every second. Dyson’s “Gap Optical Targeting” machine-learning system analyzes those images to locate spaces between teeth.

Once a gap is identified, the toothbrush can respond in around 100 milliseconds by releasing a cone-shaped jet of mouthrinse directly into the space.

A toothbrush that watches where you brush

The idea is to perform brushing and interdental cleaning at the same time.

Instead of relying on a conventional water-flosser jet, Dyson developed a broader conical spray designed to sweep across plaque while operating at lower pressure.

The toothbrush carries a 12.5-milliliter mouthrinse reservoir inside its handle. An internal pressure system allows it to continue firing liquid even when the brush is tilted or held horizontally to reach the back teeth. 

Users can also connect “CameraJet” to the MyDyson app and livestream what the camera sees inside their mouths.

The app provides cleaning guidance, coverage maps, and information showing areas users may have missed. Dyson says images viewed through the system are not stored on the toothbrush or uploaded to the cloud. 

Six years and 470,000 dental images

Behind the toothbrush is a surprisingly large engineering effort.

Dyson says 661 engineers worked on “CameraJet” during six years of development.

Its machine-learning system was developed using more than 470,000 dental images, while the device itself runs on approximately 16 million lines of code. The company also worked with 30 dental professionals during development and filed 38 patents connected to the product. (Dyson)

The brush head moves nearly 1,000 times per second and includes different bristle zones for cleaning tooth surfaces and gumlines.

Dyson has priced the device at $499.99 in the US, putting it far above many mainstream electric toothbrushes.
