Rabat – Essaouira’s popular beach has once again been awarded the “Blue Flag” label, signifying its adherence to environmental standards for the 20 consecutive year.
The international program, overseen by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and implemented in Morocco by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, recognizes beaches that meet criteria for water quality, cleanliness, safety, and sustainable management.
An official ceremony was held today to commemorate the designation. Local authorities, including Governor Adil El Maliki, representatives from various organizations, and civil society actors were present.
The event highlighted the ongoing efforts to maintain Essaouira Beach’s environmental quality, achieved through cleaning initiatives, waste management practices, and educational programs.
The Blue Flag program emphasizes environmental awareness alongside beach management. Educational booths run by local associations and interactive workshops for children were featured at the ceremony, aiming to instill responsible behavior towards the beach ecosystem in both residents and visitors.
The Blue Flag designation is seen by some as a potential boon for tourism. Mohammed Hassou, director of the port of Safi and region, commented on the award’s potential impact.
“The Blue Flag not only attracts environmentally conscious visitors but also strengthens Essaouira Beach’s reputation as a prime destination,” he said. The label could signify Essaouira’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices, potentially attracting travelers seeking such an experience.
Morocco has seen an increase in the number of Blue Flag sites in recent years. This year, the country boasts a total of 32 labeled locations, including beaches, marinas, and for the first time, a mountain lake. This places Morocco in 18th place among participating nations in the Northern Hemisphere.
While the program’s impact on tourism remains to be definitively measured, it does highlight the beach’s adherence to specific environmental standards.
The educational initiatives undertaken alongside beach management practices suggest a focus on both environmental responsibility and visitor experience.
