Fez — Rabat is betting on digital tools to bring more people into its historic core, with a new mobile application offering immersive, audio-guided walking routes across the capital’s UNESCO World Heritage areas.
Launched by the regional development company Rabat Region Historical Heritage , the app — titled “Rabat Patrimoine” — is built as an interactive guide for residents and visitors looking to discover the city’s heritage through curated circuits, narrated audio tracks, and geolocated maps.
Four languages and two main circuits
Available in Arabic, French, English, and Spanish, the application provides multiple routes tailored to different audiences. One option, the World Heritage Circuit, focuses on the eight components included in Rabat’s UNESCO inscription, along with the buffer zone. A second, more general circuit offers a broader overview of the city’s historical heritage.
Audio storytelling, interactive maps, and geolocation
The app combines narrative audioguides with interactive mapping, location-based itineraries, and multimedia content intended to make visits more intuitive and engaging. The tool is designed to support self-guided exploration, turning a walk through Rabat into a structured experience that blends history, architecture, and cultural context.
A broader strategy to manage and promote heritage
Rabat Région Patrimoine Historique, created in 2023, operates within the governance framework of Rabat’s UNESCO-listed property, officially titled “Rabat, modern capital and historic city: a shared heritage.” The company says its work is centered on protecting, safeguarding, and enhancing cultural heritage across the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, while treating heritage as a driver of territorial development.
Its mandate includes supporting restoration and maintenance programs, developing cultural interpretation tools, and working with institutional partners to boost cultural promotion and tourism — an approach aimed at strengthening Rabat’s position as a leading cultural destination.
