Fez — Essaouira is among the world’s top 10 retirement destinations for French seniors in 2026, according to the latest annual ranking published by the specialized platform “Retraite sans Frontières.”
The Atlantic coastal city, often referred to as the “City of the Trade Winds,” secured the 10th spot globally in a list highlighting destinations where retirees can live “happily and peacefully.”
The recognition further solidifies Morocco’s sustained appeal among international retirees, particularly those from France.
A charming and balanced city
In its profile of Essaouira, “Retraite sans Frontières” highlighted the city’s distinctive character, pointing to its narrow alleyways, whitewashed houses with blue shutters, and historic fishing port lined with brightly colored wooden trawlers. The platform also emphasized the city’s fortified seafront walls and lively medina, known for its fish markets, spice stalls, and textile vendors.
The city’s long sandy beach stretching southward for several kilometers was also cited as a major asset. Regularly cooled by Atlantic trade winds, the coastline benefits from a mild and relatively temperate climate throughout the year, a key factor for retirees seeking comfort without extreme seasonal fluctuations.
Part of a wider trend favoring authenticity
Essaouira’s inclusion comes as retirement preferences increasingly shift toward destinations that combine authenticity, quality of life, and well-being. The 2026 ranking was topped by the Greek island of Paros, followed by Tavira in Portugal and Trou aux Biches in Mauritius, placing Essaouira alongside European and tropical retirement hotspots.
Beyond individual cities, Morocco also ranked fifth among the world’s most attractive countries for retirement, trailing Thailand, Greece, Spain, and Portugal.
Why Morocco continues to attract retirees
According to the same source, Morocco’s strengths include its geographic proximity to Europe, a relatively affordable cost of living, and the widespread use of the French language. The country’s reputation for hospitality, favorable tax conditions, mild Mediterranean-influenced winters, and rich cultural and architectural heritage also play a decisive role.
The ranking is based on an analysis of public and private statistics across 12 criteria considered essential by retirees planning to settle abroad.
These include living costs, real estate, climate, healthcare quality, gastronomy, natural environment, cultural heritage, leisure options, security, integration, accessibility, and infrastructure. The assessment is complemented by feedback from French retirees already living overseas.
