Rabat – James Van Der Beek, the actor who became the emotional compass of late ’90s television as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, has died at 48.

For many, he was the voice of teenage longing, the face of fragile ambition, the boy standing at the edge of adulthood with too many feelings and too many dreams.

On Wednesday, that chapter quietly closed.

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared on Instagram.

“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

In early November 2024, Van Der Beek revealed he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer.

He spoke openly about the battle, choosing transparency over silence, a reflection of the vulnerability that defined much of his career.

Van Der Beek rose to fame in 1998 when Dawson’s Creek premiered, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon.

The series helped shape the emotional language of a generation, turning quiet seaside conversations into television history.

His portrayal of Dawson, earnest, intense, sometimes idealistic to a fault, cemented him as one of the defining faces of teen drama.

But his career extended far beyond Capeside. He starred in films like Varsity Blues, which became a cult classic, and appeared in projects including The Rules of Attraction and Texas Rangers

James Van Der Beek leaves behind not only a body of work that captured youth in all its intensity, but also a family and a generation of viewers who felt seen through his performances.
