Lugano – National Geographic has named Morocco one of the world’s top travel destinations for March, citing the country’s cultural calendar, seasonal atmosphere and favorable early-spring climate.
In its recent “Where to Travel in March” feature, the publication highlighted Morocco’s unique appeal during the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to run through mid-March this year.
According to the article, Ramadan“brings calm, crowd-free days followed by traditional music, late-night restaurant openings and a sociable atmosphere each evening when fasting ends at sunset.”
During the Holy month, daily routines across Morocco shift, with public activity increasing after sunset.
Families and communities gather for iftar, the meal that breaks the daily fast, in homes, cafés, and public spaces, while shops and markets extend their hours late into the night.
In major urban centers such as Marrakech and Fez, cultural institutions and local associations organize evening performances, night markets, and charitable events, reflecting the social and cultural dimensions of the holy month.
National Geographic also highlighted Morocco’s desirability as a travel destination for the month of March due to its more moderate temperatures, allowing travelers to explore the country’s diverse landscapes.
Several key destinations were highlighted, including the Atlantic coastal medina of Essaouira, the historic souks of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, and excursions into the dunes of the Sahara Desert.
The feature also drew attention to Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. National Geographic described the celebration as a period of “three days of gift-giving, cultural performances and feasting on special sweet pastries and pancakes.”
During Eid, families gather for communal meals, traditional clothing is worn, and neighbourhoods host festive visits, making it one of the most culturally significant moments of the year.
B eyond Morocco, National Geographic’s March list spanned multiple continents and seasonal celebrations.
The publication recommended India for its vibrant Holi festival, California for spring wildflower blooms and outdoor exploration, Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day festivities and cultural heritage events, and Australia’s Victoria, for late-summer coastal scenery, wine regions, and outdoor experiences.
It also highlighted cruises along the Nile River in Egypt, where milder temperatures make river travel more comfortable.
