Rabat – Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is preparing for her first leading role in a feature film through an adaptation of the novel “The Bell Jar.”
The project will be directed and written by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley, marking her first film since winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Women Talking” in 2023.
Eilish, one of the world’s most influential music artists, has earned numerous awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Original Song for tracks featured in the films “Barbie” and “No Time to Die,” created in collaboration with her brother and producer Finneas.
Originally published in 1963 by American poet and writer Sylvia Plath, “The Bell Jar” is her only novel.
The story follows a young woman struggling with mental health challenges while facing intense social pressures placed on women in the 1950s.
The film adaptation is backed by Focus Features, which will develop and distribute the project.
It will be produced by Joy Gorman Wettels, known for projects such as the series “13 Reasons Why,” with additional production support from Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal.
Although this will mark Eilish’s first leading role in a feature film, she previously appeared in the series “Swarm” on Prime Video, created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers and starring Dominique Fishback.
Her performance received positive reviews and earned her a People’s Choice Award for Best Television Performance, along with a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award.
