Rabat – The Gnaoua and World Music Festival of Essaouira, in partnership with Berklee College of Music, has officially opened applications for the third edition of the “Berklee at the Gnaoua and World Music Festival” program.

Musicians from around the world are invited to apply online and submit three video recordings showcasing their technical and artistic abilities.

Applications close on April 20, and program tuition is $450 (4,500 MAD), excluding travel and accommodation.

The six-day program is designed for professional and semi-professional musicians aged 18 and above who wish to expand their artistic skills in a collaborative, cross-cultural setting.

The program welcomes instrumentalists and vocalists from a wide range of genres, including classical, Gnaoua, jazz, pop, rock, and global music traditions.

Emphasizing experimentation and artistic exchange, participants will engage in collaborative projects and explore new musical perspectives.

Neila Tazi, president of A3 Communication and festival producer, highlighted that the 2026 edition reinforces the long-term vision of the Berklee partnership.

In a statement, she said the initiative strengthens Essaouira’s reputation as an international hub for music and cultural dialogue, while continuing to position the festival as a key platform for artistic mentorship and exchange.

Academically, the program will be led by Leo Blanco, Berklee professor of piano and Africana Studies.

Under the theme “Listening with a Global Ear – Playing with a Global Concept,” participants will focus on deep listening practices, global rhythmic and harmonic structures, and integrating these influences into their own musical voice.

Blanco noted that Essaouira offers an immersive environment where participants can interact with artists from different traditions and absorb the festival’s unique energy.

The faculty also includes Fernando Huergo, Nadia Washington, Jason Camelio, and Bri Tagliaferro. Classes will be conducted in English, with Arabic and French interpretation available.

The program culminates in a final showcase performance, and selected musicians will enjoy access to the festival concerts from June 25 to 27.

Since its launch in 2024, the program has brought together 118 musicians from 30 countries, including 29 Moroccans and participants from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, reflecting its growing international appeal and commitment to connecting artists across diverse musical landscapes.
