Rabat – Franco-Moroccan singer-songwriter Malek Belarbi, known professionally as Malek, is set to perform live at Studio des Arts Vivants in Casablanca on April 10 at 8:30 p.m.
Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1959 to a Moroccan father from Oujda and a French mother, Malek grew up between cultures that would later define his music.
Raised partly in Rabat, Mohammedia, and later Casablanca, he developed an early passion for poetry before teaching himself the guitar as a teenager.
With more than three decades in the music industry, Malek has released around ten albums blending French chanson, Moroccan influences, and elements of soul and pop.
His breakthrough came in the 1980s with the song “La Mal vie,” which introduced his poetic style to wider audiences and remains one of his most recognized tracks.
Beyond performing, the artist has also played a role in nurturing Moroccan music.
In the 1990s he helped launch the label Maya Productions and later served as a juror on the popular Moroccan television talent show Studio 2M, supporting emerging singers across the country.
Singing mainly in French but also in Moroccan darija, Malek often highlights his dual Franco-Moroccan identity, a theme reflected in both his lyrics and musical style.
