Lugano – British architecture firm RSHP has been selected to design a new terminal at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, following an international competition.
In an Instagram post on its official account, RSHP revealed the project, led by Morocco’s National Office of Airports, which forms part of the country’s broader “Airports 2030” strategy and is expected to significantly expand capacity at one of the country’s busiest travel hubs.
RSHP highlighted that the terminal will feature an “H” shaped layout designed to meet international hub standards, improving connection times, baggage handling efficiency, and aircraft access, while also supporting the expansion plans of Royal Air Maroc.
Developed in collaboration with interior design company ALA Concept and engineering firm Egis, the new terminal will initially accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually, with room for future expansion as air traffic continues to grow.
The project is conceived as a modular system, allowing for faster, component-based construction.
Architecturally, the design draws heavily on Casablanca’s coastal identity, with a sweeping roofline intended to evoke the movement of Atlantic waves, reflecting the city’s position as a gateway between continents.
Inside, the terminal will incorporate elements inspired by traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, highlighting the balance between efficiency and cultural expression.
In addition to the terminal, the wider development includes new runways, aircraft stands, and supporting infrastructure, further advancing the country’s aviation network.
The terminal is scheduled to become operational by 2029, positioning Casablanca as a key international hub ahead of “the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”
The project underlines Morocco’s ambition to strengthen its role as a global travel gateway, combining modern infrastructure with culturally rooted architectural design.
The announcement follows RSHP’s recent win for the redevelopment of the Rives-Défense site in Paris, further highlighting the firm’s growing portfolio of large-scale international projects.
