Fez — Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” offering a wider glimpse at the director’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
The footage shows Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca, facing mythological dangers on his long journey home after the Trojan War.
The trailer also shows Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of the suitors threatening Odysseus’ household, and Charlize Theron as Circe, the powerful sorceress from Homer’s poem.
The trailer debuted during Monday night’s episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” where Nolan appeared to discuss the film and its mythic source material. The new footage expands the scale of the adaptation, showing Odysseus confronting the Cyclops and returning to a kingdom under pressure.
A star-heavy retelling of Homer
“The Odyssey” brings together one of Nolan’s largest ensembles to date. Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, his wife, and Tom Holland as Telemachus, their son.
The film also stars Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page, and Jovan Adepo.
Nolan wrote the screenplay and produced the film with Emma Thomas through their longtime production company, Syncopy. Universal Pictures is distributing the project.
The studio’s official site describes the film as coming to theaters on July 17 and confirms that it was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.
Nolan returns after ‘Oppenheimer’
“The Odyssey” marks Nolan’s 13th feature as director and follows the massive success of “Oppenheimer,” which became one of the defining films of 2023.
“Oppenheimer” earned 13 Academy Award nominations and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
With “The Odyssey,” Nolan is moving from 20th-century history into one of the oldest stories in Western literature. The project also continues his push toward large-format cinema, with Universal Pictures promoting the film as a major IMAX experience.
The movie will open on July 17, the same date currently set for Disney and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” creating another high-profile summer box office matchup.
