Rabat – As temperatures continue to rise across Morocco this week, stray cats and dogs are struggling to survive the extreme heat.
With many cities experiencing intense daytime temperatures, access to shade and clean water has become a serious issue for animals living on the streets.
Across neighborhoods, medinas, cafes, and apartment buildings, small actions from residents can make a major difference.
Leaving bowls of fresh water outside homes or shops is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help.
During heat waves, animals can become dehydrated quickly, especially on hot pavement and crowded streets with little shade.
Experts and local animal rescuers also encourage people to place food and water in shaded areas only, since direct sunlight can heat metal bowls and spoil food within hours.
Feeding strays early in the morning or after sunset is also safer, helping animals avoid unnecessary exposure during peak temperatures.
Temporary shaded spots can also provide relief. Cardboard boxes, umbrellas, fabric coverings, or even open garage corners can give stray animals a place to rest away from direct sun.
Kittens, puppies, and older animals are especially vulnerable during extreme heat and often need extra attention.
People are also being urged to watch for signs of heat exhaustion in animals, including excessive panting, weakness, confusion, or difficulty moving.
In these situations, moving the animal into shade and offering small amounts of water can help while contacting a local rescue group or veterinarian.
As Morocco faces another intense summer, animal welfare groups say community care matters more than ever.
