Fez — Conan O’Brien has continued his Morocco trip in Merzouga, where a local desert tradition gave him the perfect setup for one of his classic jokes.

After posing near Casablanca’s Hassan II Mosque, O’Brien headed to the Sahara dunes with Sona Movsesian, his longtime collaborator and co-host on “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.”

The moment that caught attention was Movsesian’s sand bath, a practice Merzouga is known for. During the experience, a person lies in the hot desert sand while the body is buried and the head remains exposed. The practice is often linked to relief from rheumatism, arthritis, back pain, and joint pain.

O’Brien turned the scene into a joke with the caption: “It’s always been my dream to bury Sona alive in the Sahara Desert.”

The joke works because the ritual is real

The caption landed because O’Brien was not pretending to invent the situation. In Merzouga, sand burial is already part of the desert tourism experience, especially around the Erg Chebbi dunes.

That made the joke sharper. Movsesian was not simply buried for a prank; she was taking part in something visitors actually do in Merzouga. O’Brien then exaggerated the image into a fake dark fantasy about finally getting the chance to bury his friend alive.

The humor also fits their public dynamic. O’Brien and Movsesian often play off each other through teasing, mock irritation, and deadpan exchanges. The desert setting made that familiar routine look even more absurd.

Merzouga gave the post its visual punch: endless dunes, hot sand, and Movsesian stuck in place while O’Brien delivered the caption.
