Fez — Dave Bautista is officially taking over as Kratos in the upcoming live-action “God of War” series after Ryan Hurst was forced to exit the role because of an injury.
Variety confirmed on August 20 that Bautista is now set to lead the “Prime Video” adaptation of PlayStation’s hugely successful video game franchise.
The casting follows reports earlier this month that the “Dune” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor was negotiating for the role.
Bautista is not replacing Hurst because the studio changed its creative direction. Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set in late June and later required surgery.
The injury was severe enough that his recovery could have prevented him from returning to production until 2027.
“Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television consequently decided to recast Kratos rather than suspend the production for several additional months.
Ryan Hurst had already filmed as Kratos
Hurst had been announced as Kratos in January and began filming the series in Vancouver in February.
“Prime Video” even released an early look at Hurst in costume alongside Callum Vinson as Kratos’ son Atreus.
The actor already had history with the franchise after voicing and performing motion capture for Thor in the 2022 game “God of War Ragnarök.”
His departure creates considerable additional work for the production. Scenes already filmed with Hurst as Kratos will now need to be reshot with Bautista.
Production is expected to resume after Bautista prepares for the role. Variety previously reported that the studio hoped to restart filming in the fall.
Bautista steps into another physically demanding role
Bautista arrives with a background that makes the casting relatively easy to understand.
Before moving into acting, he built an international career as WWE wrestler Batista. He later became widely known as Drax in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and appeared as Glossu Rabban in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” and “Dune Part Two.”
His combination of action experience and dramatic roles gives him a natural path toward Kratos, a character defined by immense physical power but increasingly shaped by grief, fatherhood, and restraint.
The television series will primarily draw from 2018’s “God of War” and its Norse-era storyline.
Amazon explains that the story follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.
During their journey, Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while his son pushes him toward becoming a better human.
The adaptation has already received a two-season order. Its announced cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Alastair Duncan as Mimir.
