Rabat – Morocco ranked 15th on the list of the top 20 destinations for French tourists in January 2022.

Morocco’s ranking sustained a significant hit in January 2022 after the country closed its airspace in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19’s Omicron variant, according to a survey from a tourism-oriented French outlet.

Tourism-related traffic of French tourists in Morocco fell by 80% compared with 2019, with French tourists spending an average eight-day visit to Morocco over the same month, according to a report.

Despite recording the lowest progress rate across the spectrum, Morocco’s opening of airspace on February 7, will gradually push Morocco up the ranking again, argues the report.

Morocco often features on the list of the most popular destinations for French tourists. In 2021, five Moroccan cities appeared in the top 10 of the most popular destinations for French tourists, according to a French Business Insider survey.

Morocco’s Southern Perl, Marrakech, came in first as the most popular destination among the top cities to visit. Morocco’s financial capital Casablanca came in second, followed by Oujda in third place, and Fez in fourth. The list also featured Agadir in the eighth position.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, French nationals made up 30% of foreign tourists in Morocco, according to data from Morocco’s Tourism Observatory Office.

With France moving Morocco to the safe destinations green list for travel amid the COVID crisis, tourism traffic between the two countries is likely to gain momentum.

Tourism professionals especially welcomed the news after months of business stagnation leading many businesses to the verge of bankruptcy.
