Morocco’s efforts to promote tourism, coupled with its reputation as a safe destination, have contributed significantly to an unprecedentedsurge in visitors.

Marrakech – Tourism in Morocco is reaching new heights, Radio France Internationale (RFI) has assessed, noting that the country saw impressive figures for tourist arrivals recorded through November this year.

RFI’s report, hardly the first such laudatory evaluation of Moroccan tourism in recent years, suggests that the notable growth the Moroccan hospitality sector has seen if late is garnering considerable attention on the global stage.

In its report, the French broadcasting network stressed that Morocco “is attracting an unprecedented number of tourists” and could potentially surpass Egypt as “the most-visited destination in Africa in 2024.”

RFI attributed this projection to the “nearly 16 million visitors to the Kingdom from January to November” of this year, marking “a 20% increase compared to the same period last year.”

These numbers“continue to rise,” the report emphasized, noting that should this impressive trend continue, the year  2024 could see Moroccan tourism break all the records it has set in recent years.

A Booming Industry

Tourism, which accounts for 7% of Morocco’s GDP, has already generated over €9 billion in revenue for 2023 — before even accounting for December.

According to RFI, “this record, too, is expected to be surpassed in 2024.”

The Moroccan government has ambitious plans for the industry, targeting 17.5 million tourists, MAD 120 billion in foreign currency earnings, and the creation of 80,000 direct jobs alongside 120,000 indirect jobs by 2026.

RFI noted that this goal may “be achieved earlier than anticipated,” thanks to the country’s robust tourism strategy.

Safety: A Key Advantage

RFI emphasized that Morocco’s “favorable security situation” has been a major factor driving the sector’s success.

The Kingdom’s efforts to promote tourism, coupled with its reputation as a safe destination, have contributed significantly to the surge in visitors.

Popular Destinations and Key Markets

Among Morocco’s most sought-after destinations is Marrakech, which benefits from excellent connectivity through low-cost airlines. As RFI reported, “there are no fewer than 34 direct routes between France and Marrakech.”

French tourists remain the largest group of foreign visitors to Morocco. But British tourism is also on the rise, with a “47% increase compared to the previous year,” according to the French public broadcaster.

As Morocco gears up for 2024, its tourism sector is set to solidify its position as a vital pillar of the national economy, further enhancing the country’s reputation as a premier global destination
