Rabat – American billionaire Elon Musk says he is currently learning about Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveler and scholar.

Musk made the announcement in a post on X on Wednesday while recommending a podcast.

“Highly recommend “The Explorers” podcast for stories of exploration of many cultures over the ages,” the post reads.

“Am currently learning about Ibn Battuta, an amazingly widely traveled Islamic explorer,” the Tesla founder adds.

Born in 1304, Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Battutah was a distinguished traveler and scholar of Amazigh descent.

In 30 years, Ibn Battuta embarked on extensive journeys, covering a vast expanse of territories including North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, the Iberian Peninsula, and West Africa.

He devoted the end of his life to documenting his travels in a work titled “A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling,” more commonly referred to as “The Rihla.”

Ibn Battuta’s travels set him apart as the most prolific explorer in the pre-modern era, covering a staggering distance of approximately 117,000 kilometers.

This distance exceeded the expeditions of Zheng He, who covered around 50,000 kilometers, and Marco Polo, who journeyed approximately 24,000 kilometers.
