Fez – Jnan Sbil garden is set to be the stage for several unique performances and extraordinary musical encounters tonight during the Fez the World Sacred Music Festival, featuring Tunisian Maluf, Sufi chanting, and a remarkable fusion between the bansuri flute and the Cristal Baschet.
Starting at 5:00 p.m., the event “Crystal Winds” will present a captivating fusion of the bansuri flute and the Cristal Baschet, an unusual 20th-century musical instrument.
This collaboration, which debuted in February at the Sacred Spirit Festival in Jodhpur, will showcase the talents of Loup Barrow, one of the few musicians skilled in playing the Cristal Baschet.
The instrument, designed by the Baschet brothers in 1953, produces ethereal sounds as glass rods are gently caressed by the fingers, creating an enchanting blend with the bansuri flute.
At 9:00 p.m., Khadija El Afrit, accompanied by the Ensemble Musiqat de Tunisie, will perform the “Istikhbar,” a unique rendition of texts from 1872.
This performance is the result of extensive musicological research on Tunisian Maluf music by Naoufel Ben Aissa. The manuscripts, containing transcriptions of the Tunisian Maluf and Nawbat music, have never been performed in their original form and were first introduced to the public in the early 20th century.
