Casablanca – Morocco and China crossed paths in Casablanca, where boundaries softened as a shared sense of harmony took shape. A quiet feeling of connection lingered in the air, shaping the moment into something unified and present. That was the atmosphere that defined “China Connection Day,” held today at ESCA Casablanca.
Co-organized by ESCA, the Morocco-China Bridge Association, the Confucius Institute of Hassan II University of Casablanca, ANAMA Association, and the Chinese Cultural Center in Rabat, the event opened a direct window onto Chinese culture through a series of immersive activities.
“China Connection Day” took shape within a timeline of milestones and anniversaries where shared histories quietly intersect, including Chinese Language Day, the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Casablanca and Shanghai, and the 70th anniversary of China-Africa relations.
“Today we just tried to let our Moroccan students at ESCA and other visitors feel, see and understand more the Chinese language, Chinese culture, and the importance of Chinese language,” Keltoum Leghdaich, President of Morocco-China Bridge Association, told MWN Lifestyle.
A journey through Chinese culture
The event showcased different facets of Chinese culture, from calligraphy and traditional crafts to dance, music, and culinary traditions. Participants experienced moments where Moroccan and Chinese cultural expressions met naturally, creating a shared space of discovery and exchange. Workshops further encouraged hands-on engagement and interaction.
Confucius Institute students also captivated the audience with performances inspired by Chinese artistic traditions, blending song, dance, and other cultural expressions into a dynamic showcase. As it ended, the ceremony drew a wave of applause, wide-eyed attention, and that rare, suspended silence that follows something truly unforgettable.
Beyond the performances, an exhibition space brought China closer to Casablanca, featuring elements ranging from classic Chinese films to decorative objects reflecting centuries of heritage, as well as traditional clothing. Visitors were offered a closer glimpse into different aspects of Chinese culture.
A space for mutual discovery
Such initiatives play an important role in strengthening Moroccan-Chinese relations, opening pathways to cultural exchange and deeper understanding. They also highlight not only differences, but the points where cultures intersect and resonate.
In an exclusive interview with MWN Lifestyle, Cheng Hongjin, Director of the Confucius Institute of Hassan II University, reflected on the importance of such events in strengthening cultural ties between Morocco and China, describing them as opportunities for mutual discovery.
“I think the event helps Moroccan students and also Chinese people get to know each other through beautiful arts and also Moroccan traditional arts when mixed together.”
He added, “It’s not only history, but also feeling between two different peoples. We know that we have something in common.”
As the event wrapped up, audiences left with more than impressions, but a lingering sense of Morocco and China having shared a meaningful cultural moment. It lingered as something felt rather than simply observed.
