Rabat – Morocco’s rock and metal scene may not always be at the center of the country’s mainstream music conversation, but it has been steadily growing over the years. 

From heavy riffs and raw vocals to alternative sounds and experimental influences, local bands are creating their own scene and building audiences along the way. 

Moroccan listeners have diverse musical tastes spanning hip-hop, indie, alternative, electronic music and much more. 

Yet when it comes to local artists, pop and rap still dominate the conversation.

That doesn’t mean other genres are missing from Morocco’s music landscape. The country has a growing community of rock and metal musicians who have been creating, performing, and building their own audiences for years.

For anyone looking to explore beyond pop and rap, here are five Moroccan bands worth discovering.

‘Betweenatna’

You cannot talk about the Moroccan rock and metal scene without mentioning “Betweenatna.” 

Created in Casablanca in 2011, the band quickly became one of the better-known names in the local scene.

Their songs, including “Lay Chafi” and “Mi Lalla,” are performed in Darija and stand out for their sharp, sarcastic tone and thought-provoking lyrics, often touching on social issues and everyday realities.

‘Lazywall’

“Lazywall” brings a different approach to alternative rock,blending traditional Arabic influences with modern rock. 

The members described their sound as “a tagine of traditional Arabic instruments, rock, and vivid messages,” reflecting the band’s distinctive fusion of styles. 

‘Dark Delirium’

For those who lean more toward metal, “Dark Delirium” offers something heavier.

Created by Jamal Morjane in Casablanca, the one-man oriental project has been part  of Moroccan metal since 2012.

Its sound combines ancient Middle Eastern musical influences with metal and technical riffs, creating dark metal melodies for listeners looking for something beyond conventional metal.

‘Suicide Machine’

Since its creation in 2012, “Suicide Machine” has built its identity around death metal, sharp riffs, dark tones and technical passages,. 

The band has also taken its music beyond Morocco, representing the country at the 2016 “Festival de la Guitar” in Tunisia.

‘New Hate’

Created in 2024, “New Hate” may be one of the newer names on the list, but the group has already started making its presence felt.

Influenced by Metallica and Alter Bridge, the band brings together raw vocals, grunge, and songs performed in Darija. 

Their sound has already earned second Prize in the Rock/Metal category at the 23rd edition of Tremplin L’Boulevard.

The list could easily go on, with other niche groups such as “Pagan Ulver,” “TOMBSTONE,” “WITHOUT,” and “SakadoYa,” each bringing their own blend of authenticity, heavy instruments, and storytelling to Morocco’s rock and metal community.
