Rabat – From September 4-8, 800 illuminated drones will take over Rabat’s historic Chellah, transforming the night sky into a celebration of Morocco’s past.

The show, part of “Nostalgia, Emotions of Yesteryear,” and organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, will take audiences on a journey through Chellah’s history, highlighting the civilizations that shaped the site, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Marinids.

What to expect?

The spectacle will combine synchronized drones, narration, music, lights, and laser effects to transform the historic site into an open-air celebration of Morocco’s heritage, with two performances each evening.

The project, estimated at MAD 5.32 million ($572,000), aims to offer visitors a new and immersive way to discover one of Morocco’s most remarkable archaeological treasures.

Inside Chellah

Chellah is one of Rabat’s most remarkable historic sites, bringing together layers of Moroccan history in one ancient setting.

Located on the banks of the Bou Regreg River, the site has roots stretching back to the Phoenician era before becoming the Roman settlement of Sala Colonia. Its archaeological remains offer a glimpse into the civilizations that once shaped the region.

The site later became an important Marinid necropolis in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Marinids built a fortified complex around the ruins, including a mosque, a madrasa, tombs, gardens, and monumental gates.

Today, the blend of Roman ruins, Islamic architecture, and lush vegetation gives Chellah its distinctive atmosphere.
