Rabat – In an achievement that celebrates diversity and cultural representation, Jasmin Ossebaar has become the first Dutch-Moroccan woman to be crowned Mrs. Universe 2023 in the Netherlands.
With a strong drive to make a difference, Ossebaar spoke with Morocco World News to share her journey, aspirations, and plans for using her platform to advocate for causes close to her heart.
When asked about her emotions on winning the title, she said her victory has left her “feeling on cloud nine,” humbly expressing her gratitude and happiness.
“My family in the Netherlands and Morocco are incredibly proud of me. I worked so hard towards this title and that my goal became reality still feels like a dream,” she said.
The 29-year-old woman emphasized her pride for being the first Dutch-Moroccan woman to win the title, adding that her goal is to showcase that the Netherlands is “incredibly multicultural and tolerant, providing a platform for every background and culture to develop.”
She believes that her triumph sends a powerful message of inclusivity and how two cultures can “beautifully coexist.”
A dream come true
Ossebaar’s journey throughout the competition was not without its challenges. She explained that she had applied for the competition in 2018, but feelings of insecurity held her from showing up to casting.
“Every year, I would reapply, but my insecurities held me back and I didn’t show up. Until this year. I wanted to challenge myself. 2023 was going to be my year!” she said.

The casting day was “nerve-wracking” for Ossebaar, who was surrounded by numerous beautiful and talented contestants. But on the same day she found out she made it among the 10 finalists.
Overcoming her initial shyness and insecurities, the 29-year-old gradually opened up, forming strong bonds with fellow finalists. “By opening up, I allowed myself to grow and got to know some wonderful girls.”
Through dedication, personal growth, and support from her employer and colleagues, she managed to overcome each hurdle she faced during the six-month journey ahead of the finale.
Standing against domestic violence
During this period, the contestants had several assignments to complete, including collecting clothing donations for a women’s shelter that houses women victims of domestic violence.
The issue of domestic violence hits close home for Ossebaar, as she has experienced it throughout her teenage years.
“The fact that Mrs. Universe Netherlands stands against domestic violence against women is something I deeply resonate with. Having personally experienced it, I understand how women and children feel in such situations,” she stressed.
For this reason, Ossebaar became passionate about raising awareness and supporting victims. She revealed plans to collaborate with organizations that support victims of domestic violence, and volunteer as a coach to provide support to victims.
“I hope to inspire women so that they regain their confidence and understand that even after setbacks, it is important to pick yourself up because it is precisely in that resilience where you can achieve so much.”
Mrs. Universe journey begins
Now, Mrs. Universe for the Netherlands prepares to represent her country in the Mrs. Universe competition in Manila, the Philippines, where she will be competing against contestants from 80 other nations in October.
While acknowledging the slim chances of winning and claiming the Netherland’s first-ever Mrs. Universe title, she is excited to pursue this dream, hoping to make a difference with her “confidence, intelligence, and charisma” and make it to the top 20.
“I won’t be disappointed if I don’t win. Ultimately, I’m doing this to further develop myself, meet new people, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. So, I definitely won’t forget to enjoy this wonderful adventure,” she underlined.
Balancing her new responsibilities as Mrs. Netherlands Universe with various appearances and engagements, including hosting the Miss Teen Netherlands pageant, is a challenge Ossabeer is ready to tackle.

Stressing the importance of self-care, she intends to manage her time efficiently while ensuring she has moments to recharge and find a healthy balance between work, personal commitments, and pageant-related activities.
Beyond the pageant world, Ossebaar has inspiring and diverse goals, as she envisions herself as a self-employed event planner or an independent entrepreneur who focuses on improving the happiness of employees in the workplace.
In addition, she aspires to embark on projects that address issues in her community, no matter how small, recognizing that even the little things can make a significant impact.
