Fez — The “Ballet National de Pologne” (Polish National Ballet) is set to perform in Morocco for the first time on June 2, bringing a Polish gala to the Mohammed V National Theater in Rabat.

The theater’s official program lists “Soirée Polonaise” (Polish Evening) for 8 p.m., with two works on the bill: “Ssss…” and “Kilar Concerto.”

The event is hosted by the Embassy of Poland in Rabat.

A night built around Chopin and Kilar

The first piece, “Ssss…,” is choreographed by Edward Clug and set to music by Frédéric Chopin. The Polish National Ballet’s own repertoire notes describe the work as built around five Chopin nocturnes, with its world premiere at Stuttgart Ballet in 2012 and its Polish premiere in 2025.

The second piece, “Kilar Concerto,” is choreographed by Krzysztof Pastor and set to Wojciech Kilar’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. The work premiered in Warsaw in December 2023 and turns Kilar’s music into three contrasting moods: dynamic, reflective, and spiritual.

Together, the two works give the Rabat audience a clear idea of what the company wants to show: Polish music treated not as a museum object, but as living material for contemporary dance.

A Polish cultural moment in Rabat

The company is based at “Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa” (Grand Theater – National Opera) in Warsaw. The theater describes the Polish National Ballet as the successor to Teatr Wielki’s historic ballet company, continuing Warsaw ballet traditions that date back to the 17th century.

That history gives the Rabat performance more weight than a simple touring stop. It brings one of Poland’s major cultural institutions to a Moroccan stage at a time when Rabat is increasingly positioning itself as a space for international artistic exchange.
