This recognition puts the Northern Moroccan city on the map as a melting pot of tradition and modernity.

Benguerir — Tetouan, a historic city in northern Morocco, was officially designated today as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for the year 2026.

This prestigious recognition was announced by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in collaboration with the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF), both of which work to foster intercultural exchange and cooperation across the Mediterranean region.

Why Tetouan?

Known as “the White Dove,” Tetouan boasts a unique blend of Andalusian, Arab, and Amazigh cultures, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and vibrant traditions.

The city’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, exemplifies its historical significance as a cultural crossroads.

Being named the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue acknowledges not only Tetouan’s rich heritage but also its ongoing efforts to preserve and promote intercultural harmony.

This title highlights the city’s role in bridging diverse civilizations and fostering mutual understanding.

What’s in store for 2026?

Throughout the year, Tetouan will host a series of events, including:

  • Art and Music Festivals: Think Mediterranean beats, local legends, and global stars bringing the house down.
  • Cultural Exhibitions: Imagine walking into spaces that blend past, present, and future — perfect for your Instagram feed.
  • International Forums: Not just for academics — these conversations are for anyone who cares about culture, unity, and the Mediterranean’s future.
  • Street Celebrations: Because culture is for everyone, from the medina’s winding alleys to the buzzing public squares.

These events aim to strengthen cultural ties across the Mediterranean while spotlighting Tetouan as a creative and vibrant destination.

Why should you care?

This isn’t just about putting Tetouan on a pedestal — it’s about creating opportunities for people across the Mediterranean and beyond.

Expect a tourism boom, economic wins for local businesses, and collaborations that’ll make waves far beyond 2026.

For the city, this is a game-changer. For Morocco, it’s proof that the country is a cultural heavyweight. And for you? It’s your chance to witness history in the making.
