The social platform that has been under scrutiny for damaging the mental health of today’s youth provided a pivotal platform at the Casablanca summit.

Casablanca – Today, TikTok hosted its inaugural Mental Health Summit in Casablanca, marking a pivotal moment in addressing mental health challenges in the digital era.

Bringing together experts, advocates, and content creators, the event demonstrated TikTok’s dedication to fostering online safety and promoting well-being, particularly among teens.

In an interview with MWN Lifestyle, Malak Jafar, TikTok’s Outreach and Partnerships Manager for the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkiye, talked about the collaborative spirit behind the platform’s mental health initiatives. “Safety, particularly user safety on the platform, is not a one-man show,” she stated. “One hand doesn’t clap. That’s absolutely a fact when it comes to safety on TikTok.”

Mental health, but make it a TikTok trend

The first discussion, about mental health in the digital age, explored the profound psychological effects of social media on young people. Jallal Toufiq, a psychiatrist and mental health advocate, gave remarks on the urgent need to create safer digital environments to support youth well-being.

Toufiq also spoke to MWN Lifestyle about the profound impact of social media on the mental health of young people.

“This event is about the impact of social media on mental health in youth. And this is a very important issue. The reason is, first of all, youth spend a lot of time on social media, very often excessively. Social media serves many purposes,” he told MWN Lifestyle.

“First, they allow the youth to isolate themselves. However, social media can expose them to huge pressure. The pressure is, the first one is comparison. We compare ourselves to what we see. When you scroll on any social media, you tend to identify yourself with the person you see. You try to create models that you want to identify with,” he added.

Building on this perspective, Imane Kendili, psychiatrist and affiliated professor at UM6P, addressed the pressures of social media, such as comparison anxiety and stigma, while offering practical strategies to counter these challenges.

Adding to the dialogue, Malak Jaafar, TikTok’s Outreach and Partnerships Manager, spoke on the platform’s innovative safety tools designed to foster a more secure and positive online experience for users.

Social media’s mental health check

The second discussion focused on  the role of platforms like TikTok in reducing stigma, building supportive communities, and promoting mental health awareness.

Adil Taouil, a TikTok content creator, shared his journey of using the platform to advocate for mental health. Clinical psychologist Ayoub Benabbou provided strategies to raise awareness and combat stigma, while psychotherapist Myriam Bahri offered a localized perspective on Morocco’s mental health challenges.

In an interview with MWN Lifestyle, content creator Adil Taouil shared his unique perspective, touching on the role of creators in shaping the mental health discourse.

“A lot of experts were discussed, and we will follow the perspective of the content creator to be able to discuss this,” he explained.

“I learned a lot of things, and I tried to give a new perspective to be able to benefit the people present. I achieved a lot of results that will develop my content from now on,” Taouil added.

Likes, shares, and mental health dialogues

The summit demonstrated the transformative potential of collaboration among experts, creators, and platforms in shaping a safer and more supportive digital world.

TikTok’s initiatives, including setting screen time limits and preventing online bullying, reflect its proactive stance in promoting mental well-being.

Closing the event, TikTok reiterated its mission to redefine the role of digital platforms in advancing mental health awareness and creating meaningful connections, both online and offline.

As Morocco emerges as a key player in these critical conversations, TikTok’s Mental Health Summit stands as a testament to the power of collective action in addressing modern mental health challenges.

The summit left attendees optimistic about the future, showcasing TikTok as a catalyst for change.
