Eid Al Fitr is expected to take place on Friday in Egypt, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geographics (NRIAG).
The center said on Monday that Ramadan will last 9 days in Egypt this year, with Friday marking the beginning of Shawwal.
The tenth month in the Islamic calendar, Shawwal marks the end of Ramadan.
In response to rumors and speculation that a solar eclipse will impact the crescent sighting for the month of Shawwal, the center stressed that the eclipse will not affect Egypt.
Quoting the center, Egypt Independent reported that the eclipse will be seen in Western Australia, the eastern parts of East Timor, and Indonesia.
Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the public sector holiday for Eid Al Fitr will be from April 20-25.
If confirmed, Egypt will be part of the majority of countries that will celebrate Eid on Friday. In addition to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and many others in the Gulf region are expected to celebrate the festival on April 21.
Meanwhile, Morocco and a few other countries are expected to announce April 22 as Eid Al Fitr. The country will confirm the official date on Thursday, April 20 following the crescent moon sighting.
