Marrakech – Team Pixel, Google’s exclusive invite-only program, has been sending free products to influencers and creators since 2017.
While such programs are industry norms, the 2024 guidelines have raised eyebrows.
Many creators feel these new rules push the boundaries of ethical promotion, sparking controversy in the influencer community.
Google is under fire after it was revealed that influencers were asked to pledge their allegiance to the new Pixel phones over competing brands.
According to 9to5Google, the demand, posted on social media by disgruntled content creators, warned influencers that failing to comply would result in losing their brand partnerships.
This controversial move has sparked a backlash, turning what was meant to be a promotional push into a PR disaster.
A leaked screenshot reveals Google’s controversial request to influencers: “By opting into this program, do you acknowledge that you are expected to feature the Google Pixel device in place of any competitor mobile devices?”
The message went on to warn, “Please note that if it appears other brands are being preferred over the Pixel, we will need to cease the relationship between the brand and the creator.”

Voices in the creator community are speaking out against the new terms, arguing they compromise the ability to post unbiased reviews, which is key to maintaining viewer trust and credibility.
Tech reviewer Adam Matlock from the TechOdyssey YouTube channel told The Verge he had depended on the program for early tech access but has now quit due to the new conditions.
Previously, according to Matlock, creators only needed to use hashtags like #teampixel or #giftfromgoogle for FTC compliance.
Google rolled out this lineup on August 13, featuring the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold.
Each model showcases significant hardware enhancements and a revamped design, aiming to set new standards in the smartphone market.
The Pixel 9 series integrates advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, promising smarter features and improved user experiences.
