Fez — Conan O’Brien has given Moroccan fans a new reason to speculate, after a photo surfaced showing the American comedian in Casablanca near the Hassan II Mosque alongside his longtime collaborator Sona Movsesian.
The image, shared online with the caption “Look who I ran into in Morocco! (I mean the mosque, not Sona),” shows O’Brien leaning into the kind of dry absurdity that has shaped his comic partnership with Movsesian for years.
The post quickly drew attention from fans of “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” especially those who have long wanted to see him bring his travel comedy format to Morocco.
A very Conan Morocco moment
The joke works because Sona is not a random travel companion in the Conan universe. Team Coco identifies Movsesian as one of the hosts of “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” noting that she began working for O’Brien as his executive assistant in 2009 and joined the podcast in 2018.
Their dynamic has become one of the podcast’s main pleasures: Conan plays the overeducated chaos machine, while Sona often cuts through his madness with deadpan honesty. Seeing the two appear in front of one of Morocco’s most recognizable landmarks gives the photo an instant “Conan abroad” feeling.
The location adds to the effect. Casablanca’s Hassan II Mosque is one of Morocco’s most photographed landmarks, with the official mosque foundation describing its minaret as 200 meters high and noting its laser directed toward Mecca with a range of 30 kilometers.
Could Morocco be getting the Conan treatment?
The post also lands after Morocco had already entered Conan’s orbit through his podcast. In a December 2024 episode titled “Never Ask Directions In Rabat,” Conan spoke with Yousra from Rabat about Moroccan street food, nightlife, and spa options.
That earlier conversation now feels like accidental foreshadowing. O’Brien has built a major second act around travel comedy, including the Emmy-winning “Conan Without Borders,” which Team Coco says visited 13 countries.
For now, there is no confirmed public announcement that Morocco will feature in a new Conan travel episode. But the Casablanca photo is enough to fuel speculation, especially with Sona appearing in the frame and the post leaning into their familiar comic rhythm.
Whether it becomes a full segment or remains a one-off travel joke, the image already does what Conan’s best international comedy often does: it turns a landmark visit into a character moment.
