Rabat – A trip to the beach in Morocco is rarely just about swimming and sunbathing.
Once the towels are down and the sea is calling, someone is usually ready to start a game, whether it is football on the sand or a casual tennis match by the water.
Football on the Sand
Beach football is one of those summer traditions that needs little planning. A ball, a few friends and a stretch of sand are usually enough to turn a relaxed afternoon into a competitive match.
Across Morocco’s beaches, it is common to see groups dividing into teams, setting up improvised goals and playing until the heat, the sunset or the next swim forces a break.
What makes beach football different is its informality. You do not need a proper pitch, kit or referee. The sand becomes the playing field, and almost anyone can join from regular players to strangers who simply want to have fun.
And, as with football anywhere in Morocco, “just one quick game” can quickly become much more serious.
Tennis, but make it beachside
Tennis brings a different kind of energy to the beach. While it requires more equipment and space, beachside games have become another way for friends and families to turn a day by the coast into something active.
For some, it is a proper match. For others, it is simply a few rallies between swims.
The appeal is easy to understand: the beach already provides the setting for a relaxed day, while a quick game adds movement, competition and something to do between dips in the sea.
These spontaneous sports moments are part of what makes Moroccan beach culture feel social. A beach day is often shared with friends, cousins or family, and games naturally become another way to spend time together.
Football and tennis may be very different sports, but on a Moroccan summer beach, they serve a similar purpose: to keep people moving, bringing groups together and turning an ordinary day by the sea into a memory.
Because in Morocco, sometimes the best part of going to the beach is not just getting in the water, it is deciding who is playing next.
