Rabat – Hollywood actor Mahershala Ali is returning to the screen with a deeply personal and unconventional action film, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” a project that brings questions of faith, family, and redemption to the center of its story.
Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film follows Latif, a devout Muslim hitman whose life changes dramatically after the sudden death of his wife.
Left to care for his newborn and two other children, Latif embarks on a dangerous journey while confronting questions of faith, responsibility, and mercy.
The film’s unusual title immediately stands out. “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” refers to a hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad is asked who is most deserving of a person’s good companionship.
The answer names the mother three times before the father, emphasizing the importance and elevated status of mothers in Islam.
The title therefore gives the film a religious dimension that goes beyond its action-thriller premise.
Ali plays Latif as a character whose faith is not simply a background detail.
In an interview with GQ, Ali explained that one of the first questions he asks when approaching a character is where that person stands in relation to God.
The director, who is also Muslim, sought to involve members of Atlanta’s Black Muslim community in the production.
He told GQ that the team was aware of the responsibility involved in portraying Muslim characters and religious practices on screen.
The result is an action film that attempts to place questions of faith and morality alongside violence, family obligations, and survival.
The project also carries an unexpected connection to Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot.
Tariq began developing “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” after a personal experience involving his wife and newborn son inspired him to explore the realities of parenthood, vulnerability, and the pressure placed on fathers.
For Ali, the change appears when he described the new film as closer to the kind of original work he wants to be remembered for.
Rather than relying entirely on large-scale fight sequences, Tariq said the action was designed around the story and the characters.
The filmmaker emphasized tension and emotional stakes over spectacle.

After years of questions surrounding the Marvel project, the actor said he has moved on and would rather focus on original stories that resonate with audiences in unexpected ways.
