Rabat – Chandler Bing, one of Friends’ most beloved characters, would have turned 57 today.

Played by the late Matthew Perry, Chandler became a fan favorite for his quick wit, sarcastic one-liners.

Perry turned the quick-witted character into one of television’s most recognizable sitcom personalities.

He starred on the show for all 10 seasons, alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.

Chandler was introduced as the friend who always had a joke ready, particularly when things became uncomfortable.

His humor became his trademark, from his exaggerated “Could I be any more…” delivery to his tendency to turn even the most serious moments into an opportunity for a perfectly timed one-liner.

Perry’s comedic timing helped make Chandler a fan favorite, while his more vulnerable storylines gave the character a depth that went far beyond the jokes.

Over the years, Chandler gave Friends some of its most memorable moments.

Whether he was panicking over relationships, navigating his complicated family history, trying to understand his feelings for Monica, or simply exchanging ridiculous banter with Joey, his humor became a huge part of the show’s identity.

The Chandler lines fans still remember

Some of Chandler’s most recognizable moments include:

“Could I be any more…”

“I’m hopeless, awkward and desperate for love.”

“Was that sarcasm?”

“Chanandler Bong.”

“I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”

And then there was his endless back-and-forth with Joey, which gave viewers one of the sitcom’s most beloved friendships.

Their apartment, their ridiculous schemes, their arguments and their loyalty to each other became one of the emotional centers of Friends.

But remembering Perry today is about more than Chandler’s jokes.

RIP Chandler

Perry died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, after he was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that his death was an accident caused by the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine listed as contributing factors.

Perry had been open about his long struggle with addiction and wrote about it in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.”

His death brought renewed attention not only to his career but also to his efforts to help others struggling with addiction and recovery.

His Friends co-stars described the loss as devastating, emphasizing that their relationship went far beyond being colleagues on a television set. In a joint statement following his death, the cast called themselves a “family.”

Nearly three years after his death, Chandler Bing remains everywhere: in memes, TikTok clips, reruns, reaction GIFs and the countless jokes fans still quote.

That may be one of the clearest signs of Perry’s impact. He created a character whose humor still feels instantly recognizable decades after Friends first premiered.
