Rabat — Two generations of pop and club culture meet on “Danceteria Afterhours,” as Madonna and Charli XCX come together for a track rooted in New York nightlife.
Released on September 24, the collaboration looks back at the club culture that shaped Madonna’s early career while bringing Charli’s own memories of discovering music and performing into this track.
Produced by Madonna alongside Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price, the song turns nightlife memories into a conversation between two artists from different generations

The original “Danceteria” pays tribute to the legendary New York club of the same name, where Madonna became part of the city’s emerging downtown scene.
The club played an important role in her career. She reportedly gave DJ Mark Kamins a demo of “Everybody” there, where he played it to a packed crowd. She also performed at the club early in her career.
On “Danceteria Afterhours” Madonna revisits that period by referencing figures associated with New York’s creative and club scene, including Fab 5 Freddy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the Rock Steady Crew.
Charli, meanwhile, looks back on her own journey, recalling herself at 15, performing in London and later spending time in Los Angeles with producers A G. Cook and Sophie.
Her verse gives the track a contemporary perspective while echoing Madonna’s connection to the underground scenes that helped shape their respective careers.
The collaboration follows a series of public interactions between the two artists, including their “Club Confessions” party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week. Their new single ultimately brings those exchanges into the studio, creating a track rooted in the shared influence of club culture.
For Madonna, “Danceteria Afterhours” arrives just days before her return to the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, where she is scheduled to perform for the first time at the ceremony in 23 years.
