Fez — Vince Zampella, the American video game executive widely credited with shaping modern first-person shooters through franchises such as “Call of Duty,” has died at the age of 55 following a car crash in Southern California.

According to U.S. media reports, Zampella was killed on Sunday in a single-vehicle accident on the Angeles Crest Highway, a scenic mountain road north of Los Angeles. Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after midday in the San Gabriel Mountains.

What authorities say about the crash

California Highway Patrol officials told local broadcaster NBC4 Los Angeles that Zampella was driving a southbound Ferrari when the vehicle veered off the road just after exiting a tunnel. The car struck a concrete barrier and caught fire.

Zampella was reportedly trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene. A passenger was ejected during the crash and later died at a hospital. Authorities said the identity of the passenger had not yet been publicly released, and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.

Industry tributes pour in

News of Zampella’s death prompted an immediate response from across the video game industry. In a statement to USA TODAY,  Electronic Arts described his passing as an unimaginable loss.

“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work,” the company said.

In a separate statement cited by the Associated Press, the publisher added that Zampella was “a friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator,” whose influence helped define modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers worldwide.

A defining figure in modern gaming

Zampella rose to prominence as a co-creator of the “Call of Duty” franchise, one of the most commercially successful and culturally influential series in video game history. Over the course of his career, he played a central role in shaping blockbuster titles that set industry standards for gameplay, storytelling, and online competition.

His work not only transformed how action games were made, but also helped elevate video games into a dominant global entertainment medium, connecting players across borders and generations.

An enduring legacy

Beyond individual titles, Zampella was widely respected as a creative leader and mentor within the industry.

Colleagues frequently credited him with fostering talent, pushing technical boundaries, and maintaining a player-focused vision in an increasingly commercialized sector.

As tributes continue to circulate from developers, fans, and industry leaders, Zampella’s death marks the loss of a figure whose impact extended far beyond any single franchise.

His legacy, many in the gaming world say, will endure in the games he helped create and in the generations of developers and players his work has shaped.
