Rabat – American actress and Hollywood star Cameron Diaz said that, at the beginning of her career, she was ‘“used” without her knowledge to smuggle drugs to Morocco, mere weeks before she landed her career-changing part in ‘The Mask’ franchise.

“I was a mule carrying drugs to Morocco,” Diaz said in a podcast reported by the British newspaper the Mail Online.

During the same podcast, the 49-year-old actress revealed that she was given a “locked suitcase” of drugs in the nineties to take with her on a trip from Paris to Morocco.

While she was at the time aspiring to become a model, Diaz didn’t know that the suitcase she was carrying contained illegal substances. The actress said she was rather  told that the suitcase contained outfits for a modeling job.

It wasn’t until she reached the border that she realized she had been used to traffick substances, she argued.

Speaking with podcast host Hillary Kerr, the actress detailed how she was at the time struggling to land a job as a model. She had saved enough money for a Paris trip to start her career as a model, only to end up spending a year in the French city without working “one day,” Diaz recalled

“I was there a full year and didn’t work one day. I couldn’t book a job to save my life. Then I got one job but, really, I think I was a mule carrying drugs to Morocco — I swear to God.”

Detailing the incident, Diaz told the host that she began to panic upon arriving at the airport as she realized she had been carrying drugs.

“I’m this blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl in Morocco. I’m wearing torn jeans and platform boots, with my hair down — this is really unsafe. I told them, ‘I don’t know, it’s not mine, I’ve no idea whose it is.’ That was the only job I got in Paris.”

By denying any link to the suitcase, the actress dodged a 10-year prison sentence and left the suitcase with the airport authorities before returning to France.

After her lucky escape, Diaz landed a leading role in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Mask,” putting her on the map for the future successful roles she played.
