Rabat – Amid threats of inflatable crocodiles, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez change their wedding plans seeking a more protected and fortified location.
At a time of rising global tensions and on the ground protests against over-tourism and inequality, the pair have decided to move their wedding to a more secure location in what local protest group “No Space for Bezos” considers “an enormous win”.
At the last minute, the big wedding reception party scheduled for Saturday will be moved from Scuola Grande della Misericordia in Cannaregio, the center of Venice, to Arsenale, in the Castello district.
Arsenale is a historic complex of shipyards and armouries surrounded by fortified walls. These will necessarily provide protection against major security threats and local protestors for the cast of famous attendees.
The move came after local activist groups threatened to block the canal with inflatable crocodiles.
Apparently, the Venetian residents have a lot more to say than congratulations to the happy couple.
Following in the footsteps of other famous couples such as the Clooney’s, the Amazon founder and journalist decided to get married in this magical floating city.
Meanwhile, along with other Southern European cities, Venice has been a hot-spot of campaigns against over-tourism for a number of years.
Residents attribute environmental degradation, increasing cost-of-living, and over-exhaustion of resources to the influx of tourists each summer.
Since Bezos released his Venice wedding plans back in March, groups such as “No Space for Bezos” and “Greenpeace” have protested against the wedding.
The wedding budget is well over $50 million USD (450 million MAD) and the high-profile guests like Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk and Leonardo DiCaprio are purported to be arriving in an estimated 95 private jets taking the concept of “destination wedding” to a whole new level of opulence.
