Lugano — On April 18, Eddie Murphy was honored with the prestigious American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, celebrating a career that has shaped comedy, film, and popular culture for decades.

The ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles, brought together major figures in entertainment, including Kenan Thompson, Martin Lawrence, Mike Myers, and Chris Rock.

Tributes throughout the evening highlighted Murphy’s influence across generations. 

Speaking to the Associate Press, Thompson praised Murphy for his inspirational role as a person of colour in the industry, stating, “He is the person that let me know that it is possible. It was possible to have a job like this, and also a person of colour who’s working at this level of excellence.”For his part, Myers spoke to Extra TV on his experience working with Murphy, highlighting that  “It’s just such an honor. He’s a legend.”

Murphy’s recognition by the American Film Institute places him among an elite group of artists honored for lifetime achievement in cinema.

The evening included a musical tribute by Jennifer Hudson, celebrating Murphy’s performance in Dreamgirls. 

The event also raised millions for the American Film Institute’s educational programs and will be broadcast as a special, extending the tribute to a global audience.

Murphy’s rise began in New York, where he developed a passion for comedy at a young age and began performing stand-up as a teenager. 

His career spans nearly five decades across television, comedy and film, making him one of the most influential entertainers of his generation. 

His breakthrough came in the early 1980s on “Saturday Night Live,” where his performances quickly made him a standout talent and launched him into global stardom.

He went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest box office figures with films such as “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Coming to America,” and “Dr. Dolittle.” 

Murphy also left a lasting mark in animation with his iconic voice role as Donkey in the beloved “Shrek” franchise, infusing the character with humor and charisma and helping make it one of the most memorable performances in modern animated film.

Murphy’s recognition reinforces his legacy as a pioneering figure whose work continues to shape comedy and film across generations.
