Fez — Morocco’s publishing sector recorded a total of 7,143 new titles in 2025, marking a modest increase compared to the previous year, according to newly released figures from the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco.
The data, presented during a dedicated event reviewing the year’s output, reflects a growth rate estimated between 4% and 6%, pointing to a steady but moderate expansion in national intellectual production.
Literature dominates national output
The report highlights literature and creative writing as the leading category, accounting for approximately 30% of all publications. This includes novels, poetry, and short stories, underscoring the continued vitality of Morocco’s literary scene.
Human and social sciences followed closely at 28%, while religious studies represented around 12% of total output. Books for children and young readers made up roughly 10%, with the remaining titles distributed across academic research, translation, and scientific or technical works.
This distribution suggests a balance between creative expression and scholarly production, with literature maintaining a central role in shaping Morocco’s cultural output.
Arabic leads, multilingualism persists
Arabic remained the dominant language of publication, representing around 65% of all titles released in 2025. French followed with approximately 25%, while the remaining 10% included Amazigh, English, and other languages.
The figures point to a continued linguistic hierarchy in publishing, while also reflecting Morocco’s multilingual identity and the growing presence of diverse linguistic expressions in print.
Self-publishing and digital formats on the rise
The report also highlights structural shifts within the publishing sector. Self-publishing accounted for nearly 18% of all releases, indicating a growing number of authors choosing independent routes to publication.
Meanwhile, digital publishing continues to expand gradually. E-books represented about 7% of total output, suggesting early but noticeable movement toward digital formats, even as print remains dominant.
A sector in gradual transformation
According to the National Library, 2025 stands out not only for the volume of publications but also for their thematic and linguistic diversity, as well as evolving distribution methods.
The data reflects ongoing efforts by industry stakeholders to modernize the sector and adapt to new technologies, particularly in areas related to digitization and access.
While growth remains measured, the steady increase in output and diversification of formats point to a publishing ecosystem that is gradually evolving without losing its traditional foundations.
