Rabat – “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has swung into theaters with a record-breaking debut, delivering one of the biggest opening days ever at the North American box office and putting itself within reach of Avengers: Endgame’s long-standing opening weekend record.

The latest Marvel blockbuster earned an impressive $168 million ( MAD 1.55 billion) on its first day, including preview screenings.

The figure surpasses the previous opening-day record of $157.4 million ( MAD 1.45 billion) set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

While the film has already secured a historic first-day performance, the race for the biggest domestic opening weekend remains underway.

“Avengers: Endgame” still holds that title with $357.1 million ( MAD 3.29 billion) earned during its first three days in US theaters.

Sony is currently projecting “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” to finish its opening weekend with around $325 million (MAD 2.99 billion).

However, industry analysts believe the film could climb past $350 million (MAD 3.22 billion) if it maintains strong momentum through Sunday.

Many box office experts suggest that crossing the $105 million (MAD 967 million) mark on Saturday alone would significantly improve its chances of overtaking Endgame’s record.

Regardless of where the final numbers land, the film has already become Sony Pictures’ biggest domestic opening ever, comfortably surpassing “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which debuted with $260.1 million (MAD 2.39 billion).

The release also marks the strongest opening of director Destin Daniel Cretton’s career.

For Tom Holland, it represents his second-largest opening after “Avengers: Endgame,” while Zendaya celebrates the biggest opening weekend of her career.

Audience reception has been equally encouraging.

According to PostTrak, 88% of moviegoers said they would recommend the film, while CinemaScore awarded it an A grade, just one step below the coveted A+ received by “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Younger audiences fueled much of the film’s success. Moviegoers aged 18 to 24 accounted for 36% of ticket buyers, while men made up 61% of the audience compared to 39% for women.

PostTrak also found that 58% of viewers attended because of their loyalty to the Spider-Man franchise, 47% said the movie simply looked entertaining, and 41% cited the cast as a major reason for buying a ticket, with Tom Holland and Zendaya remaining two of the film’s biggest attractions.

Internationally, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has also dominated the Chinese box office, earning more than $71 million (MAD 653 million) since its Wednesday release.

The strong performance carries added significance because “Spider-Man: No Way Home” never received an official theatrical release in China, making the franchise’s return to the country’s cinemas a major event.

The blockbuster launch has also lifted the overall US theatrical market.

Total box office revenue across all films is projected to reach around $434 million (MAD 3.99 billion) over the weekend, an increase of 262% compared to the same period last year.

The total would also surpass the previous record set during the opening weekend of “Avengers: Endgame,” signaling another major boost for the theatrical exhibition industry.
