Rabat — “The Final Bet,” a novel published in 2001 by Moroccan author Abdelilah Hamdouchi, is getting its chance to make the leap from the page to the big screen. The novel has been described as the first Arabic detective novel to be translated into English.

Variety reports that the film adaptation brings together Hollywood Ventures Group, Canadian company Big Picture Cinema Group and Moroccan production company Pink Sheep Productions. Big Picture Cinema Group will contribute to the film’s financing and production.

The story follows Othman, a young Moroccan man married to Sofia, a wealthy Frenchwoman considerably older than him. When Sofia is found murdered at their residence in Aïn Diab, Casablanca, investigators immediately turn their attention to her husband, despite his protests of innocence.

At its core, “The Final Bet” is a thriller that explores police violence, and corruption.

The novel also tackles class differences and the dangers of being framed when authorities favor the most obvious suspect. Casablanca is therefore more than just the setting: the city and Moroccan society play a central role in the narrative.

Hamdouchi expressed his pride in seeing the novel make its way to cinema, stating, “It is a great source of pride to see ‘The Final Bet’ move from the page to the screen,” he told Variety.

The adaptation also stands apart from the many foreign productions that have used Morocco as a backdrop. Instead, it brings a Moroccan work to international audiences, based on a novel written by a Moroccan author and developed with a local production company.

Hollywood Ventures is presenting “The Final Bet” as a film aimed at the international market. The group particularly highlights Casablanca’s visual potential and the universal appeal of a story centered on murder, injustice and a struggle against a dysfunctional police system.

“While this is a work of fiction, it speaks to a period of profound legal and social change in Morocco and to questions of justice that transcend borders. We’re incredibly proud to help bring Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s story to the screen,” commented Glenn Gainor, co-founder of Hollywood Ventures Group.

The producers are presenting the project at the Toronto film market, with production targeted to begin in 2027.
