Casablanca – Taylor Swift made MTV Video Music Awards history at the 2026 ceremony, taking home three awards and becoming the most-awarded artist in VMA history.
Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” Best Direction for “Opalite,” and the inaugural Artist Director Honors. The three wins pushed her career VMA total to 33, moving her ahead of Beyoncé, who previously held the record with 30 wins.
A record-breaking night
The American artist entered the ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMA wins. By the end of the night, she had three more Moon Persons and a new record to her name.
Her new Artist Director Honors also recognized a side of her career that has become increasingly visible over the years. Swifts had written and directed 18 music videos across her career, building a visual style that often blends storytelling, symbolism, and humor.
The new honor came with a special moment of its own, as she also premiered her “Patient Zero” music video, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Honoring Dolly Parton
Swift’s Video of the Year win for “The Fate of Ophelia” came with a tribute to the late country music icon Dolly Parton.
During her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to the late country music icon Dolly Parton, praising her storytelling and calling her “the ultimate showgirl.”
“The Fate of Ophelia” appears on Swift’s 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, with the song serving as the album’s first single.
Madonna leads the night
While Swift made history, Madonna led the night with seven wins, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, and Best Dance.
BTS also took home three awards, including Song of the Year and Best K-pop for “Swim.”
For Swift, though, the night belonged to a milestone that now puts her alone at the top of the VMA record books.
