Rabat – According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation is officially developing a Spider-Punk animated feature, with none other than Daniel Kaluuya co-writing the script alongside rising screenwriter Ajon Singh.

Kaluuya, who voiced the spiky-haired anarchist Hobie Brown in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” is also expected to return in the lead role. The project is still in early development; there’s no director, cast, or release date yet.

Spider-Punk was one of the breakout characters in the Spider-Verse sequel. He only appeared on screen for a short time, but quickly became a fan favorite for his chaotic energy, dry humor, and unforgettable animation style that looked like it was ripped straight from a rebellious 1970s magazine.

According to producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Kaluuya’s take on the character was so powerful that they actually rewrote parts of the film just to give Hobie more to do.

“But once we got to know Daniel, we rewrote the part so it became more necessary,” they said in an interview with EW.

Now, Kaluuya’s stepping behind the scenes to help shape Hobie’s solo story, and he’s teaming up with Singh, who’s also writing “Primetime”, an upcoming thriller from A24 starring Robert Pattinson.

Together, they’re expected to dig into Hobie’s punk-rock world, likely bringing the same bold visuals and anti-establishment vibe fans loved in “Across the Spider-Verse”.

The film continues Sony’s investment in the Spider-Verse, which has been both a critical and box office hit. The original “Into the Spider-Verse” won an Oscar and grossed over $390 million (MAD 3.85 billion).

Its sequel pulled in nearly $700 million (MAD 6.91 billion) and earned another Oscar nomination. The trilogy’s final installment, “Beyond the Spider-Verse”, is now slated for June 2027.

So while Hobie Brown might’ve started as a supporting character, he’s not staying in the background for long. With Kaluuya’s voice and vision behind the wheel, Spider-Punk is shaping up to be more than just a spinoff.
